Two Ways

I must have seen you
facing south
while I stay west,
facing the eastern side
watching the sun
in its magical rise;
didn’t see it
disappearing,
taking its time
behind me.

I must have seen you
wandering away
in the darkness of a cave
while I stay put
at the foot of the hill;
I waited
for another day
watching shadows
dance and play.

I must have seen you
at the fork
finding your destination,
I looked behind
tracing my path to yours;
but you’re lost,
preoccupied,
not noticing
the way I took.

I must have seen
you walking away.

Frozen Lake

Cold, cold heart
I cannot fathom thy depths;
Dead at the surface
Yet, I see signs—
A pair of blind fish
Wriggling beneath
The frosted mirror;
But how thick?
Wall, how thick now is
That hoary cobweb of thine?
If we assay to break thee,
Wilt thou suffer me?
Wilt thou bewray not
The warmth hid from me
Down deep?
How else could it be
That underneath the unmoving ice
Should those fish still live?

A Prayer

As you promised,
I stand here waiting
to understand,

to calm down;
for my boat has been
tossed around,

Caught in a squall
and about to
capsize again;

its sail utterly
destroyed and its
body, broken.

I hear only of
thousands of
raging waves,

and my own cries
of desperately asking
to be saved.

There is but one
flicker I saw
from a distance

I give up my last
strength and take it as
a second chance,

and dreaming of
a cozy yet
abandoned cabin,

I reached out
my dear hand
and hoping

that my captain
will take me back
to his ship,

where finally
I can get some
real sleep

As you promised.

Mundane

I had them all
Lined up here
In a crowded space
Of do’s and don’ts
Unspoken rules
Empty words
Guarded gates
And open doors

Bloodstains
from broken glass
Crumbs
Uneaten pies
Melted butter
Spoiled milk
A network of mess
And unsung lullabies

It turns around
It makes no sense
Pain on ankles
Stubbed toes
Reverse the flow
Always
The current wins
You’re still blown
Away by the wind

Steady

There’s powder near my eyes
Silencing the tears
The silent longings for
Long-forgotten lullabies
And never-ending tales

There’s salve near the wounds
Cooling the old burn
The suppressed cravings for
Unsweetened memories
And freely flowing ales

I am steady
In a world of loss
To keep what’s left of me
