Papers stacked
Each page a burden
A thin line,
A finite number
Little sounds
Flicking nuisance
Each flip, each fold
Each marked reminder

White and clean
Not gone forever
Blank and cold
And lost in wonder
Smudged and dotted
Rolled and bruised
Cut, confused
Crumpled, thrown
Hid, unknown.

Tap, tap, tap
The drops of ink;
Whoosh, swoosh
The gust of wind.
One page down,
The storm is gone.
Lift, write down
Erase, then done!

How many times
Till fade the sounds,
Till songs be sung?
How many lines
Have come and gone?
How many
Till words have rhymed?

Page break
Margin, space
Bleed the words
Then come what may
Because, because
No pain, no shame
And still, no gain
But something’s left
The thoughts are heard
The whisper’s loud
Enough to bear
But throbbing heart’s
Still beating there

In pieces…
Full stop.
